Dr Stewart McCain, Associate Professor of History at St Mary’s University, Twickenham (SMU), has been awarded funding from the British Academy to support ongoing work with Hogarth's House.
The grant will support academic and public engagement work around the forthcoming exhibition, 'Senses and Feelings in Hogarth's World', due to open this Spring.
Hogarth’s House is a historic house in Chiswick that was the former home of celebrated artist William Hogarth. The House has been open to the public since 1904 and is managed by the London Borough of Hounslow.
Speaking on the award, Dr McCain said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for us to work with a local heritage partner to further our educational mission. Our project asks people to reflect on the nature of the senses and emotions through an interpretation of Hogarth's work. These are such profound aspects of the human experience, and we are looking forward to exploring the ways in which looking at Hogarth's art can prompt us to consider how the way we sense and feel has changed over time."
The British Academy is the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences. The British Academy works to invest in researchers and projects across the UK and overseas, engage the public with fresh thinking and debates, and bring together scholars, government, business, and civil society to influence policy for the benefit of everyone.
The exhibition at the House is scheduled to open in the Spring, with an academic conference planned for July 2025.
