Six students at St Mary’s University, Twickenham (SMU) have recently medalled at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Indoor Athletics Championships 2025 and the BUCS Karate Championships 2025. Both of these events are part of the BUCS Nationals.
Student Sam Charig took home a Gold medal in the Men’s 1500m race, while Ruben Hedman placed second in the Men’s 60m Hurdles. Mia Waldman won a Bronze medal in the Women’s 3000m event.
In the Karate Championships, student Roshelle Lue Fatt took home Gold in the Kumite Individual Senior-50kg event. Michelle Lue Fatt placed third in the Kumite Individual Senior-55kg event, while Bijan Bayati also won Bronze in the Kata Individual Male Intermediate event.
Speaking on her win, Roshelle said, “This was my best performance and the atmosphere at the event was superb. There were people from St Mary’s as well as people I didn't even know cheering me on in the finals. It was such a great experience and a fantastic performance and result for me. It truly is an honour to have represented the University.”
Both the BUCS Indoor Championships and Karate Championships took place in Sheffield from the 14th to 16th February.
British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) is the national body for delivering competitive higher education sport in the UK. Its aim is to work with member institutions to get more students active, through traditional competitive sport and providing physical activity opportunities.
The St Mary’s Cheer club also saw success in Nottingham for a competition where one team were crowned division champions, while the other team placed third. Both stunt groups were also crowned division champions.
