St Mary’s University, Twickenham (SMU) recently hosted a community Frame Running event on campus, in collaboration with Anne McNee, Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust, and Kirby Brown from Momentum Mobility & Rehab.
Students from the Physiotherapy and Sport Rehabilitation undergraduate programmes at St Mary’s had the opportunity to be part of the event gaining valuable hands-on experience in the field.
The event, which saw children and students try frame running for the first time, was organised by Jo Moody, Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy at SMU.
Frame Running is an adapted sport for children, young people, and adults who use mobility aids. Athletes use a three-wheeled frame, propelled by their own movement, with support from a saddle and body plate, while steering with handlebars.
Speaking about the event, Physiotherapy student Flo Driver said, “During my time at St Mary’s, I’ve had the opportunity to engage in additional learning experiences such as the Frame Running event today. It was great to help people learn to use accessible frames on the track at St Mary’s, and we had a lot of fun.”
Grace Davies, another Physiotherapy student, added, "I really enjoyed helping at the Frame Running session today, it was amazing to see the children smiling, enjoying it, and it was a pleasure to be a part of that."
Sport Rehabilitation student Lucy Howard said, “The Frame Running event was a great opportunity for us to not only be able to learn a new sport but also pick up new skills related to our course.”
Event organiser and Senior Lecturer Jo Moody commented, “Seeing physiotherapy and sports rehabilitation students working so closely together was inspiring. Witnessing the frame runners' sense of freedom and the joy on their faces as they tried something new was very special.”
