Sam Sheppey, an MA Sports Journalism graduate from St Mary’s University, Twickenham (SMU), has been selected for the Journo Resources Fellowship 2024/25.

The Journo Resources Fellowship is a highly competitive fellowship awarded to 15 emerging journalists each year. Fellows will receive six months of bespoke support to help them find employment in the industry, as well as paid commission opportunities for writeups on the Journo Resources website, with support from professional editors.

Previous fellows have gone on to work at media organisations such as the BBC, The Guardian, PA Media, and The Sun.

Sam graduated from SMU in 2024 and has been published in publications including talkSPORT, VAVEL, Blues Focus, and Late Tackle. His work to date includes interviews, opinion pieces, short stories, match previews, and reports.

As part of Fellowship application process, Sam pitched a piece exploring how important it actually is for a sports journalist to know about every sport. Sam will now work on writing this up to be published on the Journo Resources website.

Speaking on becoming a fellow, Sam said, “Being accepted onto the 2024/25 Journo Resources Fellowship is the next step in my sports journalism journey, building on my master’s degree from St Mary’s. I learned a lot from my time at St Mary’s and the course allowed me to find the area of sports media I’m most interested in through workshops, industry experience, and lectures.

“The Journo Resources Fellowship, lasting six months, will enable me to publish work that I’ll be paid for, learn from industry mentors, and work alongside fellow journalism graduates on joint projects. The end goal of the Fellowship is to land my first paid role in sports journalism, and my master's degree at St Mary’s has gone a long way in helping me achieve this goal.”
