BSc Sport Rehabilitation students at St Mary’s University, Twickenham (SMU) have completed summer placements with Major League Baseball (MLB) teams in the US.
Students on the Sport Rehabilitation course spent six weeks in Florida and Arizona, observing and supporting the Sports Medicine department at MLB teams. The SMU students assisted with injury prevention programmes, injury management, pitch-side support, and the rehabilitation of surgical cases.
Alongside the placements in Florida and Arizona, SMU students Katie Lulu and Caoimhe Cunningham spent time with the Chicago Cubs, Jack Woodbridge completed his placement with the Kansas City Royals, and Charlie Vendy worked with the Texas Rangers, all as part of their Clinical Placement module.
Speaking on this opportunity for the St Mary's undergraduate students, Senior Lecturer in Sport Rehabilitation at SMU Oliver Blenkinsop said, “This is our seventh year sending Sport Rehabilitation students to the US to work with Major League Baseball teams and it's clear that the students gain valuable skills on their placement that enhance their clinical practice, contributing to their Clinical Placement module in their second year."
St Mary’s has a long tradition of excellence in sport rehabilitation. The University was the founding higher education institution for sport rehabilitation in the UK, with the first intake of students in 1994.
The University is an academic member of World Federation of Athletic Training and Therapy (WFATT), which provides collaboration with an international network of academic institutions from countries including America, Ireland, Greece, Japan, and Taiwan.
