St Mary’s Athletes Win Team Medals at European Cross Country Championships

Five athletes from the Endurance Performance Centre (EPC) and England Athletics (EA) Talent Hub at St Mary’s University, Twickenham (SMU) have won team medals with Great Britain at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships.

Seven current and former athletes from St Mary’s were selected to compete at the European Championships which took place on Sunday 8th December in Antalya, Turkey.

Current student Mia Waldmann and alumna Megan Gadsby took home the Team Gold medal with GB in the Women’s U23 category. In the race, Mia came in 6th place overall and Megan at 23rd.

Alumna Izzy Fry came 14th overall in the Senior Women’s race, and won a Team Silver medal with GB in that category.

In the Senior Men’s race, alumnus Ellis Cross and EA Talent Hub athlete Rory Leonard took home the Team Bronze medal with GB. Rory finished in 9th place, while Ellis came in at 25th.

For Ireland, current student Frank McGrath came in 62nd place in the Men’s U20 category.

Speaking on these results Performance Coach and EPC Co-ordinator Craig Winrow said, “We’re thrilled to see such excellent individual results for all athletes, as well as five athletes winning team medals for Great Britain. St Mary’s has a strong tradition of excellence at the European Cross Country Championships, and it’s great to see that legacy continue.”
