Five students on the Sports Journalism MA at St Mary’s University, Twickenham have been employed by leading UK sport and entertainment publisher GRV Media.

At a time when journalism graduates across the country are finding it hard to secure a job, students on the Sports Journalism course at St Mary's are proving that they have acquired the skills and knowledge that employers in the industry are looking for.

Writing on LinkedIn, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman at GRV Media, Vic Daniels, said that he regularly interviews people who have no knowledge on basic skills such as content selection, headlines, site traffic, reader engagement, and SEO optimisation.

In contrast, Vic says he does “rate places like St Mary’s University, Twickenham which runs a great postgraduate course.”

The Sports Journalism course at St Mary's has a strong focus on sports writing through the Sports Gazette and several other partner platforms. The award-winning teaching team are proud of the programme’s employability record, and this is achieved through their industry networks and integrating professional practice and work experience into the curriculum.

Recent graduate Oscar Pick said, “Studying sports journalism at St Mary's University was an incredible experience. Looking back to where I was before starting the course as a pure novice to where I am now, I can say with a high degree of confidence that the difference is night and day.

"Throughout my year at St Mary’s I was given the freedom to be my own journalist, compelling me to search for original stories that would make for interesting articles. With everything I learnt on the course, as well as alongside it, I am now consistently utilising my journalistic skills in my new job at GRV Media.

"The job has allowed me to write about boxing, a sport that has captivated me from the moment I watched my first fight. With my career in boxing journalism beginning to take shape, I can only look back on the Sports Journalism course with fond memories and genuine pride."

Classmate Toby Reynolds added, “Before starting at St Mary's I had only every written a few articles for a student paper, but the course equipped me with the skills needed for my job. I'm excited to start with GRV and jump into the world of sports journalism.”
