SHOCC began life as a registered charity (no. 1120787) in 2007, focusing on projects in its local area and overseas. Since then it has raised nearly £1,000,000 for over 40 projects. It has also provided advice for University staff and students wanting to work overseas.
It has also started a volunteering scheme, with the financial support of the UK Catenians, that enables an undergraduate to work for a short period at one of its school projects in Tanzania.
The aims of the charity are to continue the work started by a small group of University staff in 1971 to tackle disadvantage and inequality, and to help others help themselves. Its primary focus is on the advancement of education.
