St Mary’s Alum Beth Potter Wins Word Triathlon Event

Former student at St Mary’s University, Twickenham (SMU), Beth Potter, has been crowned the supertri E World Triathlon Champion after winning the race in a time of 36:09 at the London Aquatics Centre in Queen Elizabeth Park.

Beth is a former PGCE student and alumna from the Endurance and Performance Centre (EPC) at SMU. She has already qualified to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympics after taking the Triathlon World Championship title in Spain last year with a time of 1:53:19.

The supertri E World Triathlon Championship is a one-day event that features an award winning esport format. The cycling and running elements of the event take place in a virtual race environment.

Beth previously competed in the 10,000m track event at the Rio 2016 Olympics for Team GB, before making the switch to the triathlon.

The supertri E World Triathlon was the first time this year that Beth has come head-to-head with French athlete Cassandre Beaugrand. Both Beth and Cassandre are seen as favourites in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Beth and Cassandre were tied for the majority of the race, until the final 500m where Beth was able to take a 25 second lead.

Speaking on Beth’s achievement Head of Sport St Mary’s Andrew Reid-Smith said, “Beth has now won two world titles in the last seven months, and it’s great to see her start the 2024 season in such a positive way. I’m really looking forward to seeing Beth in the triathlon at the Paris Games, it’s going to be one of the most exciting events. Beth will also take confidence from her earlier win at the Olympic test event - she’s a proven world-class triathlete and I’m sure we’ll see her deliver another great performance in Paris.”
