St Mary’s Signs Agreement with the Mauritius Institute of Education

St Mary’s University, Twickenham has signed an ambitious Memorandum of Understanding with the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE).

Founded in 1973, the MIE is a degree-awarding teacher education institution of higher learning based near to Port Louis, the Mauritian capital. MIE is responsible for Educational Research, Curriculum Development, and Teacher Education for pre-primary, primary, secondary, and tertiary Education in the Republic of Mauritius.

The new partnership will see St Mary's working collaboratively with MIE to provide progression routes for Mauritian senior teachers and other educational practitioners and leaders, through to the University’s MA Education and Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD) awards.

St Mary's will also provide a quality assurance function/role for MIE's Postgraduate Diploma in Education and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) awards.

The partnership will also develop collaborative research initiatives between the two institutions, with MIE Partnership Lead Dr Hyleen Mariaye, and St Mary’s Senior Education Lecturer Dr Mark Price recently publishing research on Narrative encounters of pedagogic partnership, and the development of collegial capital in higher education in the Journal of Professional Capital and Community.

Speaking of the partnership, St Mary’s Vice-Chancellor Anthony McClaran said, “I am pleased to see this exciting new partnership come together. We share much in terms of values and approach with our colleagues at MIE, and I am confident that this partnership will see many benefits for students and researchers at both institutions in the years to come.”

The Director of MIE, Hemant Bessoondyal views the partnership as key to driving MIE’s vision to positioning itself in the region as a centre for post graduate studies and research in education. He stated “The signing of this MoU with St Mary’s Institute of Education will enable MIE to further the goal of achieving a robust system of education through high quality professional learning for educational practitioners and research. We are so looking forward to developing this partnership in a way that it impacts on educational experience and outcomes not only locally but also regionally.”
