St Mary’s Lecturer Wins first prize at Teach Primary Awards 2021

Dr Alex Sinclair, Senior Lecturer and Science Lead for Primary Education at St Mary’s University, Twickenham has won the STEM category at the 2021 Teach Primary Awards.

The purpose of the awards is to seek out the best teaching resources to support key stage one and two pupils. The awards are divided into 10 categories: apps, CPD, English, Maths, Foundation, STEM, free, remote, SEND, and Wellbeing.

The winning book, Superhero Scientists was co-authored by Alex Sinclair and David Allen and explores the fascinating world of science. The book covers the different career paths that involve science including pilots, vets, marine biologists, and scene of crime officers. The people included are representative of the world’s diverse community. Equipped with supporting illustrations, children can read the book independently or with an adult.

In addition to the award, Alex has also written Specific Support for Science Specialists: Promoting Best Practice in Primary Schools. This is one of a collection of essays commissioned by the Gatsby Foundation to inform the current debate about the future of initial teacher training (ITT) in England, stimulated by the recent Government Market Review.

Author Alex Sinclair said, “After all the hard work it is so pleasing to get this recognition. We hope that by depicting science is carried out by a diverse array of people, children will see themselves as part of the science community and that they may consider a job in science.”
