More St Mary’s Athletes and Alumni Qualify for Tokyo Olympics and European Championships

A number of Athletes and Alumni at St Mary’s University, Twickenham have been selected for the Tokyo Olympic Games, the Under 20s and 23s European Championships.

Earlier this week it was announced that alumna Revee Walcott-Nolan will be joining Jake Wightman and Elliot Giles in representing Team GB at Tokyo 2020, after she claimed the British title in the Women’s 1500m at the British Championships. Alumna Steph Twell will be making her third Olympic appearance having been selected for Team GB in the Women’s marathon. Alumna Anna Moller will be representing Denmark in the 3000m Steeplechase.

Away from the Olympics, an additional five St Mary’s athletes and alumni have been selected to represent Team GB at the Under 20s and Under 23s European Championships in Tallinn, Estonia between 8th-18th July. Current student Shemar Boldizsar will be competing in the Men’s 200m, whilst fellow student Destiny Ogali will be competing in the 4 x 100m relay. Current student Thomas Randolph will be competing in the Men’s 800m, and alumna Izzy Fry will be competing in the Women’s 5000m.

Elsewhere current student Henry McLuckie will be competing in the Men’s 1500m at the European Under 20s Championships between 15th-18th July.

Head of Sport St Mary’s, Andrew Reid-Smith said: “With athletes being selected for Tokyo, distance runners from the St Mary’s EPC have now competed across five successive Olympics.

It’s great to see Revee being added to the GB team. Revee has made big improvements this year and she is coached by Dale King-Clutterbuck who was also a student on the endurance programme.

This will be Jake and Revee’s first Olympics, but Anna, Steph and Elliot have all run in previous Games. Anna won the last two BUCS Cross Country Championships and will be looking to progress on from her performances in Rio.

St Mary’s distance runners and sprinters have also been selected for GB at the age-group European Championships. For these athletes this is the next step in developing championship experience and hopefully pushing for senior selection.

Izzy is another runner that has made tremendous progress, regularly making GB cross country and track teams. At the last U20 Europeans she finished fourth in the 5000m and I’m sure she’ll run well in the U23s and has a good chance of placing higher.
