Six Athletes and Alumni from the Endurance Performance Centre (EPC) at St Mary’s University, Twickenham have been selected to compete for their countries at the European Cross Country Championships on Sunday 8th Dec.
Hosted in Lisbon, Portugal, the championships will bring together the leading athletics talent from across Europe to compete in a range of distances and age groups. A total of 602 athletes will represent 40 countries in seven races at the championships.
Danish athlete Anna Møller will be competing in the Women’s Under 23 Race. Anna will be hoping to be retain the Gold Medal she won at last year’s event in Tilburg, Netherlands, where she completed the 6.3km course in 20:34. In the Women’s U20 event, Izzy Fry will be competing for Team GB and Gintare Juknyte will represent Lithuania.
St Mary’s Alumnus Emile Cairess will be competing in the Men’s U23 race where he will be aiming to improve on his 8th place finish in 2018’s event. Gibraltar’s Abdullah Ahammad will compete in the Men’s U20, whilst Eoin Pierce will compete as part of the Senior Mixed Relay Team for Team Ireland.
Speaking of their Selections, Head of Sport St Mary’s Andrew Reid-Smith said, "It's wonderful to see so many students, past and present, competing at the European Champs. Some are experienced international runners and for others, this is the first time they've been selected to compete for their country. To continue to have so many running is a real testament to the hard work that the St Mary's athletes and coaches put in and we wish them every success."
