Success for St Mary’s Alumni at Great North Run

This weekend on Sunday 7^th September St Mary’s University, Twickenham Alumnus, Mo Farah became the first British Man to win the Great North Run in nearly 30 years. The race which is a half marathon distance, took place over the weekend starting from Newcastle and finishing in Tyneside. Around 57,000 people took part in the event this year and the organisers celebrated their one millionth finisher. The last British man to win the race was Steve Kenyon in 1985, who won it in 62 minutes 44 seconds. Mo Farah ran the race and finished with a personal best in one hour exactly. Fellow St Mary’s alumnus and St Mary’s Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) athlete Andy Vernon narrowly missed a spot on the podium by finishing fourth behind Mike Kigan and Stephen Kiprotich. Furthermore, alumna Charlotte Purdue finished 8^th with a time of 1:11.43.
