St Mary’s Lecturer to Speak at Labour History Day

Dr Ivan Gibbons from St Mary’s University, Twickenham will be giving a lecture at the West London Labour History Day in Acton on Saturday 22nd February.

Dr Ivan Gibbons, Programme Director and Senior Lecturer in Irish Studies at St Mary’s University, Twickenham will be giving a lecture at the West London Labour History Day in Acton on Saturday 22nd February. Ivan-Gibbons-(2) Dr Gibbons will be discussing the Dublin Lockout of 1913, one of the most severe industrial disputes in Ireland’s history, at the event held by Labour Heritage. The talk is an opportunity to hear an alternative version of the significance of the 1913 Dublin Lockout both immediately afterwards as well as the long-term consequences for Irish Labour. It will explore how poor leadership and splits within the Irish Labour movement during the 1913 crisis weakened the party considerably, and set up the secondary role that Labour has played in Irish politics since. Also giving guest lectures on the day will be Philippa Bilton, a descendant of activist Emily Wilding Davison, who will be talking about The Suffragette Movement and its relations with the Labour Movement, while John Grigg at London Heritage will be discussing Ramsay MacDonald’s stand on the First World War. More information on the event can be found on the Labour Heritage website.
