Pupils Learn the Art of Persuasion at St Mary’s

Pupils from Sacred Heart High School, Hammersmith were recently introduced to logical arguments and rhetorical devices in a workshop at St Mary’s University, Twickenham. Hosted by the Philosophy department in St Mary’s School of Arts and Humanities, the day offered year 12 pupils the chance to develop their understanding and skills in argumentation and persuasion. In lectures students learnt to distinguish between fallacious and valid arguments, and to recognise a number of classical rhetorical devices. The morning lectures were followed by a workshop, which allowed students to put the theory into practice and prepare short speeches, arguing for or against a number of topics that often spark debate in society. The day formed part of St Mary’s on-going work with schools in South-West London to offer pupils an opportunity to experience university life, whilst expanding their knowledge in a particular subject. St Mary’s Senior Lecturer Dr Marije Altorf said, “It is always enjoyable to share one’s understanding of philosophy and rhetoric, and it was good to meet these students. Some of our undergraduates helped out in the workshop and the result was there. The students from this school gave some great presentations: funny, to the point, and persuasive.”
