CMS Seminar: Mary’s kenosis of faith

Date: Wednesday 9th April 2025

Time: 3:00pm to 4:30pm

Venue: Online

We are delighted that Fr. Jim Doyle, who is currently chaplain at the Irish Cultural Centre in Paris, will give the April research seminar organised by the Centre for Marian Studies.

Theme

In his wonderful encyclical on Mary, Redemptoris Mater, Pope St. John Paul II made this insightful observation:

“At the foot of the Cross Mary shares through faith in the shocking mystery of this [Jesus’] self-emptying. This is perhaps the deepest ‘kenosis' of faith in human history” (RM 18).

Here the Pope marks out Mary’s faith as the most important act of faith in human history and as a sharing in Jesus’ own self-emptying or kenosis. He will go on to say:

"It is precisely Mary’s faith which marks the beginning of the new and eternal Covenant of God with man in Jesus Christ; this heroic faith of hers 'precedes' the apostolic witness of the Church, and ever remains in the Church’s heart hidden like a special heritage of God’s revelation. All those who from generation to generation accept the apostolic witness of the Church share in that mysterious inheritance, and in a sense share in Mary’s faith" (RM27).

This presentation will attempt to give an overview of what might be involved in Mary’s kenosis of faith and what might be some of its ecclesiological implications.
