Get hands-on experience at our Psychology Masterclass Day where you’ll explore how the brain interprets and misinterprets reality, see transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in action, and get to sculpt the brain’s cerebral cortex using plasticine!
This event is for students in their first and second year of sixth form or college.
Schedule
- 09:30am - Arrive
- 10am - Welcome & introduction
10:15am - Brain Mishaps: The Science of Visual Illusions
Think you can trust your own eyes? Think again! In this interactive session, we’ll challenge your perception with mind-bending illusions that reveal how the brain interprets (and misinterprets) reality. Discover the neuroscience behind these tricks and why your brain isn’t as perfect as you think!
11:15am - Shockingly Smart: Unlocking the Brain with Neuroscience Methods
Watch neuroscience come to life as we use TMS to control movement with just the power of magnetic stimulation! This session will explore how researchers use TMS to study the brain and cognitive function. In addition, you will learn about cutting edge software used in psychological experiments.
- 12pm - Lunch
12:45pm - Moulding Minds: A Hands-On Journey Through the Brain
Think you know your brain? Try building one! In this hands-on session, you’ll sculpt each lobe of the cerebral cortex using plasticine and learn how they work together to shape everything from memory to movement. A creative way to bring neuroscience to life!
1:30pm - Q&A
2pm - End of event
