Benedict XVI the Theologian - Symposium and book launch - 11th March 2024

A symposium and book launch to celebrate the publication of the Cambridge Companion to Joseph Ratzinger.

Among the most important modern Catholic thinkers, Joseph Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI, fundamentally shaped Christian theology in the 20th and early 21st centuries. The Cambridge Companion to Joseph Ratzinger conveys the depth and breadth of his significant legacy to contemporary Catholic theology and culture, and to mark its publication St Mary’s University is delighted to host a one-day symposium featuring important scholars discussing his theological legacy, followed by a celebratory book launch to which all are welcome.

The speakers for this event are:

• Dr Mary McCaughey - St Mary’s College, Oscott - Ratzinger on Theology: “Dynamic fidelity” - Beyond the Receiving/ Making Dichotomy
• Dr Andrew Meszaros - St Patrick’s Pontifical University -"Personalism and Doctrine in Joseph Ratzinger”

Symposium event 10am-4:45pm

The schedule for the Symposium will be as follows:

• 10am-10:20am Welcome tea and coffee in the Waldegrave Suite room D121.
• 10:20am-11:05am Rev Dr Michael Lang (St Mary’s University & Mater Ecclesiae College, London) : “Liturgy as the Lebensgrund of Theology in the Work of Joseph Ratzinger” followed by Q&A.
• 11:05am-11:50am Dr Mary McCaughey ( St Mary’s College, Oscott)
• 11:05am-12:10pm Break, tea and coffee provided
• 12:10pm-12:55pm Dr Jeremy Pilch (St Mary’s University)
• 1:05pm-1:30pm Mass in the University Chapel
• 1:30pm-2:30pm Lunch provided in the Waldegrave Ante Room.
• 2:30pm Symposium afternoon session resumes in Waldegrave Suite room D121.
• 2:30pm-3:45pm Prof Jacob Phillips ( St Mary’s University)
• 3:45pm-4pm Break, tea and coffee provided
• 4pm-4:45pm Dr Andrew Meszaros (St Patrick’s Pontifical University): “Personalism and Doctrine in Joseph Ratzinger”

Book launch event for The Cambridge Companion to Joseph Ratzinger 5:30pm-7pm

The schedule for the book launch will be as follows:-

• 5:30pm-7pm Drinks reception in the Waldegrave Suite room D121, with introductions by Rev Dr Michael Lang and Prof Jacob Phillips.
