About the session

Welcome! As you embark on this exciting journey, you're joining a programme with a proud and pioneering history in S&C education. Ours was the first of its kind in the country, and we continue to lead the way with cutting-edge curriculum and exceptional industry connections.

Our extensive links with professional teams and organisations offer you unparalleled opportunities for real-world experience and professional development. From elite sports teams to leading health and fitness organisations, you'll gain insights and skills that are highly valued in the industry.

During this session, we'll provide an overview of the structure of the degree programme, outlining what you can expect over the next three years. We'll discuss the academic and practical components of your studies, making sure you're well-prepared for both the classroom and hands-on experiences.

We'll also cover the mutual expectations between students and staff, icebreaker activities to get to know your course mates, a tour of our state-of-the-art S&C and sports science facilities, and information about libraries, labs, and support services.

About the session

This session deepen your understanding and connection with the programme, faculty, and your fellow students. You'll have the opportunity to meet the entire programme team, including the key faculty members who will guide and support you throughout your studies. You'll be introduced to your personal academic tutor, who will be an invaluable resource for both academic and personal guidance during your time here.

We'll also delve deeper into the structure of the degree programme, providing more detailed information about the academic and practical components you'll encounter over the next three years.

We'll discuss the various assessment methods – such as exams, practical assessments, and projects – ensuring you're well-prepared for what lies ahead. We'll also run a fun practical activity in the S&C gym – a gentle introduction to the practical aspects of strength and conditioning, while allowing you to experience the hands-on learning approach that's a hallmark of our programme.

These are a warm welcome and introduction to different faces you’ll see at the university, plus essential info about support services, health and safety, the code of conduct, and ID cards.

Pre-induction activities

Here's an additional pre-induction programme for students in the following categories. If you feel you'd benefit from additional support, you're eligible to apply to Get Set for Success:

  • Students who've previously been eligible for free school meals
  • First generation students (the first in family to go to university)
  • Estranged students (students no longer in contact with their families)
  • Care experienced students (students who have spent some time in local authority care)
  • Students who are carers
  • Students from Gypsy, Roma, or Traveller (GRT) backgrounds
  • Students with academic qualifications other than A-levels (BTEC, diploma, etc)
  • Refugees and asylum seekers

You’ll complete your course one block or ‘semester’ at a time. In each semester you’ll study modules. Some are core modules you have to take – others you’ll be able to choose between when you arrive, personalising the course to your interests.

Resources

Once you’re registered, you can loan textbooks and other resources from our library. We have plenty of copies of key texts, though some students choose to buy their own.

We’ll let you know more in our induction sessions. Plus how to use our online learning environment Moodle – where you can access, lecture recordings, copies of lecture slides, handouts, further reading, and interactive resources.
