About your programme

Module information

You’ll complete your course one block or ‘semester’ at a time. In each semester you’ll study modules. Some are core modules you have to take – others you’ll be able to choose between when you arrive, personalising the course to your interests.

In your first semester you will study the following modules:

• PFD4000 Professional Development One Core

PFD4000 Professional Development One (Core)

To support students to access higher education by integrating academic and work-based learning relating skills, knowledge and understanding of pedagogy and practice; build the necessary key skills for academic development and future employment in primary education including academic literacy strategies. This will enable students to build a set of tools to manage, develop and enhance their ability to read and think and to reflect on their own skillset and will learn how to structure arguments in their writing.

• PFD4001 How Children Learn Core

PFD4001 How Children Learn (Core)

The assessment provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the key principles and themes which underpin outstanding practice in the EYs, Key Stage 1 and 2. Students will also be able to demonstrate their understanding of the different ways young children learn and the practice and provision that underpins this. Students will also begin to develop the ability to provide a rationale to parents and other stakeholders behind the practice which is stipulated in the Statutory Guidance for the EYs, KS1 and 2. Students will also be able to use their early years knowledge to inform their current practice. The students are also developing essential critical writing skills and evaluating the theory behind pedagogical practice in the Early Years.

• PFD4002 Communication, Language and Literacy Core

PFD4002 Communication, Language and Literacy (Core)

Students will reflect upon how talk is used to support learning through a case study of a child in the students current setting. Weekly tasks will support the development of the case study. The essay will discuss how dialogic talk can effectively support children’s learning and will link theory and practice together.
