About your programme

Module information

You’ll complete your course one block or ‘semester’ at a time. In each semester you’ll study modules. Some are core modules you have to take – others you’ll be able to choose between when you arrive, personalising the course to your interests.

In your first semester you will study the following modules:

• Film, Style and Form Core

Film, Style and Form (Core)

Taught by the film team, this core module introduces you to the formal elements of moving image, including cinematography, sound, editing and special effects.

It also looks at genres, authorship and stardom as ways of understanding film. There is a weekly screening before the teaching sessions with relevant films for that week’s topic.

• Cinema History Core

Cinema History (Core)

Great filmmakers are invariable also great scholars of cinema. You will develop a solid foundation in the major landmarks, movements, and influential individuals throughout the history of cinema. The module will plot a path from the earliest experiments with persistence of vision, through a wide range of global influences that have brought us to the movies of the present day.

You will complete a written essay in which you will write a scholarly assignment that complies with academic conventions such as referencing and bibliography.

In addition you will create an archive-footage documentary in which you reflect upon the practice, influences and signature style of a director, cinematographer, sound designer or actor of your choice.
