Module information

You’ll complete your course one block or ‘semester’ at a time. In each semester you’ll study modules. Some are core modules you have to take – others you’ll be able to choose between when you arrive, personalising the course to your interests.

In your first semester you will study the following modules:

• Aspects of Biblical Interpretation Core

Aspects of Biblical Interpretation (Core)

This module provides a foundation in the approaches to the interpretation of the Bible today which are in play in scholarly and popular discourse. It invites you to reflect on your own and others’ reading of Scripture thoughtfully, creatively, and critically.

• Human Beings and Human Action in Medical Ethics Core

Human Beings and Human Action in Medical Ethics (Core)

This module offers a detailed exploration of some of the central conceptions about the human person in Western philosophical and theological traditions, with a view to providing a grounding to understand many of today’s most contentious debates in and around medical ethics.

• Systematic Theology and Contemporary Themes Core

Systematic Theology and Contemporary Themes (Core)

This module brings together and seeks to interrelate two articulated components:

1. an historical component examining the origins of Christian doctrine culminating in the key dogmatic definitions of the Doctrine of the Trinity and the Person of Christ
2. a present-day component which examines and analyses recent discussions about how best to interpret and perpetuate these definitions in and for the contemporary world.
• Spiritual Direction, Psychology, and Spiritual Formation Core

Spiritual Direction, Psychology, and Spiritual Formation (Core)

The module explores the interface between psychological and theological methodologies as it reflects on the interaction between psychotherapy, counselling and spiritual direction.

You will learn how to critically assess the spiritual anthropology of these differing approaches whilst exploring key moments in the development of spiritual direction. Whilst not a training course in either spiritual direction or counselling, you will be encouraged to relate the theoretical aspects of the study to contemporary pastoral situations through a theological lens.

• Applied Catholic Theology Dissertation Core

Applied Catholic Theology Dissertation (Core)

This module enables you to identify, delimit, research and write on a topic of their choice within the fields of Applied Catholic Theology (understood as the broad range of areas covered by the modules within the programme).

The dissertation has a word limit of 15,000 words. The choice of topic, the research, and the structure of the piece will be guided by an experienced academic who will be on hand throughout for support, guidance, and mentoring.
