Placements in sports settings

Safeguarding

If you are on a sports coaching placement, part of your work will involve working with children and sometimes vulnerable adults. To be successful, you need to have an awareness of the safeguarding responsibilities of a coach. It is likely that you will become aware of challenging circumstances of pupils in your class(es) and activities. You may also be someone a pupil discloses to; in this case it is essential that you follow the safeguarding policy in your placement organisation. If you feel distressed by a safeguarding concern or situation at school, seek support from your placement supervisor at the first instance. Your Placement Officer is also available to support you while you are on placement.

Adaptability, flexibility, and teamwork

Sports environments can be dynamic. Be adaptable and flexible in handling diverse tasks and unexpected challenges. This demonstrates your resilience and ability to thrive in a fast-paced setting. In addition, sports often involve teamwork. Observe and understand team dynamics, communication styles, and the importance of collaboration. Showcase your ability to work harmoniously within a team structure.

Professionalism

Maintain a high level of professionalism. Whether interacting with athletes, coaches, or fellow staff members, exhibit respect, integrity, and a strong work ethic. Professional conduct is vital in the sports industry.

Legal and ethical considerations

Understand and adhere to legal and ethical considerations in the sports industry. This includes issues related to player contracts, confidentiality, and compliance with regulations.
