We sat down with Computer Science MSc student, Shadi Behzadmehr, to talk about her time so far on the course.
Shadi did her undergraduate degree at St Mary’s and hopes to do a PhD once she finishes her master’s.
We asked Shadi what it’s been like doing a MSc in Computer Science without having any previous background in the subject area.
What made you choose a Computer Science master’s at St Mary’s?
I’d already completed my BSc at St Mary's in Psychology, and wanted to stay on as it really felt like my second home. I didn't get a chance to talk to the Programme Director before I applied for the Computer Science MSc, so I actually made a decision based on what I already knew about St Mary's and all the course information on the website. However, I am really happy with the decision I made.
What are you enjoying most about your degree so far?
Going into the course, I was quite worried about what the structure would be like as it’s the first year running at St Mary's and I didn't know what to expect. However, the Course Director has planned such a great course, and I’m really enjoying the closeness between the students and the lecturers. Sometimes it feels more like I’m just learning with a group of friends rather than being in a formal class.
So far my favourite topic has been software programming.
Was there anything you found surprising about the degree/doing a master's?
I didn't have an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, and I thought it would be harder for me to catch up with those who already have a background in the area. But actually the way the course is structured means it is possible for everyone to access the course, as they teach you from scratch.
I know a lot of people can feel apprehensive about starting a master’s, but I’d honestly just say go for it!
