We sat down with St Mary’s Santander Scholar and recent Education grad Sairah Ali to chat about her experience on the Santander programme. Sairah completed her PGCE at St Mary’s in 2018, before completing her MA in Education at the University in 2023.

The Santander Universities Scholars Programme is a three-year scholarship program that provides £30,000 in funding to full-time under-represented students at partner universities. Scholars also have access to a mentor, as well as training and development sessions.

Sairah had used the Santander Scholarship to help build her business which delivers quality enrichment and education sessions to children.

We asked Sairah about her experience as a Santander Scholar, as well as the support she received from St Mary’s.

What does it mean to be a Santander Scholar?

Being a Santander Scholar has been a transformative experience. I was thrilled to see St Mary’s collaborating with Santander, especially as I had a business idea but wasn’t sure how to execute it.

Joining the program provided me with the knowledge and support I needed to turn my business idea into reality, as well as using my Education degrees.

How has the Santander Scholarship supported you in your work?

The scholarship has definitely accelerated the development of my business. I used the funds to network, purchase resources for a summer camp, and provide training for staff. This has allowed me to establish a business where we offer engaging activities for children aged 5-16 that includes cooking, arts and crafts, and indoor sports like archery.

What kind of support did you receive from the Santander Scholarship programme?

The support from the Santander Scholarship program has been exceptional. Presenting my business idea in front of a panel was challenging, but I am incredibly appreciative of the feedback, guidance, and encouragement I received from St Mary’s staff.

This experience has strengthened my relationship with both the University and Santander, and I look forward to continuing to strengthen these relationships as I work towards taking my business to new heights.

What plans do you have for the future?

I’ve recently completed my studies at St Mary’s, with my most recent achievement being the MA in Education in 2023.

In the near future, I plan to continue growing my business, focusing on delivering quality programs for children. Long-term, I aim to expand my business internationally, providing students with exciting opportunities to work abroad for training and work experience in teaching.

Who would you recommend the Santander Scholarship to?

I would recommend the Santander Scholarship to anyone who has a clear vision but needs the support and resources to bring it to life.

It’s perfect for students or graduates who want to make a real impact with their ideas!
