I am currently a PGCE primary student at St Mary’s University, Twickenham. I completed my undergraduate degree over 8 years ago in Belfast at The University of Ulster, Jordanstown. It was completely unrelated to teaching, I studied Criminology with Social Policy. After University I had a long career in hospitality, and eventually decided to pursue teaching as it had been something I had been interested in for many years.
I decided to study at St Mary’s, as I have friends who completed the course who recommended it, also my grandfather trained there many years ago and always spoke so highly of it. Its reputation spoke for itself when I visited the campus; everyone was extremely friendly and accommodating and I knew it was where I wanted to study right away.
Moving away from Ireland was a very difficult decision and not one I made lightly, and at times it is still difficult being away from home, but the support I receive at St Mary’s has made that process so much easier.
Not only has the course has been extremely rewarding so far, but I am learning more than I could ever have imagined and loving it. I have had some of the best lecturers who have made my learning environment seem so personal, enjoyable and also always on hand for any questions I might have or even just a chat.
Most importantly I have met friends for life on the course whose support and understanding have made the tough times so much easier. I am enjoying every minute of my PGCE and couldn’t recommend St Mary’s more.
