Jamie Allwork graduated in 2019 and is now a Senior Yacht Broker at Sanlorenzo/Simpson Marine in Phuket, Thailand.
How did your degree prepare you for this role?
Interestingly, the yachting industry shares many similarities with the sports industry - it’s highly emotive and unscripted, making it thrilling to be a part of. My love for sports and the desire not to be confined to a desk drew me to this field. My degree and the modules I studied equipped me with key skills, such as dedication to excellence, time management, presentation skills, and the ability to handle detailed paperwork.
Tell us more about these skills you built at SMU. What do you need as a Senior Yacht Broker?
The most important skill is the ability to build trust and foster long-term relationships with clients, which I credit to my background in sports and the team culture. Public speaking, negotiation, and sales management were all part of my degree through various modules and assignments. Time management is also crucial, as providing a seamless service is often more valuable to clients than the financial aspects - they prioritise saving time and minimising unnecessary details.
Do you have some simple career advice for current SMU students?
My biggest piece of advice is to pursue something that excites and motivates you. Work is a significant part of life, and too many people live for the weekends. If your job isn’t stimulating, consider exploring other options. One quote that has guided me throughout my career is: “If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you’re not sure you can do it, say yes—then learn how to do it later.” – Richard Branson.
