Tips for finding private accommodation

Plan in advance

Please ensure you arrange accommodation for the next academic year well in advance, preferably in the Spring for the following academic year. If you leave your search until late into the summer, you risk renting overpriced or substandard accommodation just because you need somewhere to live.

St Mary’s StudentPad is our online private housing database. Registration is free, and you can: 

  • Search for suitable properties 
  • Register for alerts 
  • Contact landlords directly 

You can also use the message board on the StudentPad website or the St Mary’s Find a Flatmate Facebook page to connect with other students who may have a space available in their student house or who are looking for private accommodation.

Things to consider when renting 

  • Budget and bills: Check whether rent includes utilities (electricity, gas, water, internet). 
  • Tenancy agreements: Understand your contract before signing. 
  • Deposit protection: Ensure your deposit is held in a government-approved scheme. 
  • Safety and location: Choose well-connected areas close to campus with good transport links. 
  • Gas Safety: Every property should have an in-date Gas Certificate. Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a serious risk, especially in homes with gas appliances.
