Even prior to London’s announcement as the host city St Mary’s represented London’s universities on the 2012 Forum, one of the main consultative bodies for the organising committee. St Mary’s also led on the Go South Go initiative to attract competing nations to south London for their pre-Games training camps.
Athletes from ten nations and a range of different sports chose to prepare out of the University’s world-class facilities. Sporting alumni, Mo Farah and Moe Sbihi, won medals and David Weir who trains at St Mary’s won four Paralympic Gold medals. Our medal tally was enough to place us sixth in Podium’s medal table for UK universities and top of the London institutions.
St Mary’s full engagement included a number of sporting, cultural and educational initiatives and staff and students volunteering as Games Makers.
St Mary’s is forward thinking and world renowned. It shares the Olympic vision and will have a role to play in sport beyond 2012.Lord Sebastian Coe
