Generative AI in the Workplace

This course is an introduction to generative AI in the workplace. You will learn about the practical applications of the emerging technology which will be applied to a variety of sectors. Throughout the course we will evaluate potential ethical issues and considerations and some essential tips for navigating the technology, including a workshop on prompt engineering and multimedia best practices.

This course will run over four evening sessions from 6.30-8pm on the following dates:

  • Tuesday 1st October 2024
  • Tuesday 8th October 2024
  • Tuesday 15th October 2024
  • Tuesday 22nd October 2024.

Location

This course will be held at our main campus, Twickenham.

If you are unable to attend in person, there is the option to join via a live Zoom session.

Content

Throughout the four-week course, you will have an introduction to fundamental generative AI concepts.

This includes:

  • the definitions of AI and generative AI
  • the development of machine learning, large language models and prompt engineering, and their interaction with the workplace
  • an interactive session on text and multimedia generative AI best practices, exploring some open-access AI tools that have already proved useful in the workplace for writing, research, and multimedia content creation.

We will discuss:

  • the ethics of AI, hallucinations, and bias
  • the emergence of so-called 'deep fakes', how to spot them, and the importance of 'rich links'
  • content credentials and accurate sourcing.

In the final session we will look at:

  • how businesses and organisations have looked to craft robust AI guidelines to support their workforce in handling AI tools and workflows
  • what the common themes are, and what is likely to stand the test of the time in a fast-evolving industry
  • new UK and EU legislation and guidance for AI developers, and what this new regulatory environment is likely to mean for the AI industry in the months and years ahead.

All participants must be over 18 years of age to enrol.

Award

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of attendance, issued by St Mary’s University.
