The ‘Faith and Education’ symposium, held in April 2024 and funded by the Society for Educational Studies and hosted by CERRL, commemorated the 80th anniversary of the 1944 Education Act, which amongst other things legislatively defined state-funded Church schooling and made religious education compulsory in all maintained schools.
The symposium invited reflection upon the nature and purpose of faith schooling in the future against this historical context. Attended by around 40 delegates and drawing together academics and practitioners from faith and non-religious backgrounds the keynote lectures filmed here dealt with some of the ongoing questions about the role of the faiths in education in a religious plural and putatively secular society.
