Accessing additional support while on placement is not a negative! Every learner will need to extra help at some point in their course. Each stage of the intervention is documented on an Additional Support Plan (ASP) which is completed on Abyasa and monitored by Partnership. Our ASP overview provides further guidance for implementation, monitoring, and resolution of the additional support.
If all other support mechanisms have been unsuccessful, a school has the right to withdraw a trainee if the children in the class are being adversley affected by the trainee's teaching.
If a trainee requires additional support, an ASP Level 1 should be initiated by the mentor at the earliest opportunity to ensure the trainee is aware of their areas for development and put in place appropriate and timely support in order to offer trainee the opportunity to make progress. The link tutor should be contacted in the event of an ASP Level 1 being implemented and should review the SMART targets that are set to support trainee development. A review date is agreed when the ASP is put in place.
Mentors meet with the trainee to review progress against the agreed SMART targets. The following outcomes are possible:
- the trainee has made sufficient progress: normal routines resume
- the trainee has made partial progress: ASP Level 1 is extended to allow more time to meet trainee targets
- the trainee has made insufficient progress: proceed to ASP Level 2 and a meeting with their link tutor is arranged.
Explicit actions and targets agreed by all parties to support the trainee. These are usually different and more focused than the targets agreed for a Level 2 in response to the increased level of support required to promote trainee progress.
Targets are reviewed by the trainee, mentor, and link tutor. The following outcomes are possible:
- the trainee has made sufficient progress: normal routines resume.
- the trainee has made limited progress; targets are revised and ASP Level 2 is extended.
- the trainee has made insufficient progress; trainee’s school experience has been deemed as unsuccessful: proceed to Conclusion of Placement.
A school withdraws a trainee from a school placement
- the PCM will meet with the CBM and the trainee to discuss the reasons for withdrawal; these should be shared with the LT
- an Conclusion of Placement form will be completed as a formal record of the withdrawal
- the trainee will contact partnership to arrange a meeting to complete the review meeting.
A trainee withdraws from a school placement
From time to time trainees experience circumstances which may lead to them requesting to withdraw from their school placement. The trainee will:
- seek advice from their mentor, PCM, and LT to complete a Conclusion of Placement form
- contact Partnership to arrange a review meeting.
Programme withdraws trainee from a school placement
Occasionally, the programme team will make the decision to withdraw a trainee from school experience. In these cases, the programme team will:
- notify the mentor, PCM, and LT and complete a Conclusion of Placement form
- contact Partnership to arrange a review meeting.
In the unlikely event a trainee is unsuccessful on a school experience, they are required to attend a review meeting. During this meeting the school experience will be reflected upon by the trainee. A decision is made regarding the trainee’s future professional development and any support they may require.
In order to support trainees with their re-sit, they are asked to formulate a bespoke action plan that can be worked on whilst volunteering in school. It is important that targets are achieved before a re-sit, to ensure that their next placement is successful.
The re-sit may be deemed to be with or without fee depending on any extenuating circumstances. A trainee may only fail one School Experience, deemed to be with fee, during a training programme and this will incur a payment of £550. It should be noted that a re-sit School Experience may result in an extension to the course.
Please note: a resit placement will not be considered until all outstanding academic work is passed.
