On 16th April Amazon Prime released a documentary following the lives of three members of the Kings Cross Steelers Rugby Club including Nic Evans the Programme Director of Physical Education, Sport and Youth Development at St Mary’s University, Twickenham.
The King Cross Steelers is the first openly gay inclusive rugby club established in 1995, Nic Evans was the head coach of the King Cross Steelers from 2014-2018 and a former international player, gaining seven caps for Wales.
This documentary tells the story of love and acceptance from a club that empowers the LGBTQ+ community. Viewers will see the ups and downs of the players at the Bingham Cup in Amsterdam, ‘the World Cup of gay rugby’ and hear Nic Evans shed light on the difficulties she has faced as a gay female coach in a male dominated sport.
When speaking to Nic Evans about the documentary she said ““I thoroughly enjoyed building such positive relationships with the players, watching rugby have such a positive impact on the lives of the players and being part of such a vibrant LGBT+ inclusive community. It felt like a pretty special time in my life”.
