Dr Judith Bourne, Senior Lecturer in Land and Equity and Trusts Law at St Mary’s University, Twickenham has recently co-authored Law textbook Gender and the Law.
The book is the third Judith has written and the second she has co-authored with Open University’s Dr Caroline Derry.
Judith is using the book, which has been published by leading academic publisher in the Humanities and Social Sciences Routledge, as core text for her module Feminist Perspectives Law on Law: Past and Present.
The book provides an ideal introduction to gender and feminist theory for students and begins with an overview of traditional notions of gender. It provides a basic structure and overview upon which students can build their understanding of some of the complex and controversial topics and debates around gender.
It explores many fascinating and controversial legal issues including transgender rights, equal pay and equality in the workplace, the law surrounding consent and sexual offences and the role of gender norms in the criminal courts.
Judith said, “This text is designed to encourage students to scrutinise the law by engaging with critique and legal theory.”
