Students on the Sports Journalism MA at St Mary’s University, Twickenham have been shortlisted in two categories at the Student Press Awards.
The Sports Gazette, a publication run by the Sports Journalism students, has been shortlisted for Best Specialist Publication while its co-editor Matt Horsman has been nominated for the Best Multimedia Journalism Story.
Matt has been nominated for his video report on Sophie Bubb, an amateur Ironman competitor, who raced in 30+ degrees in near total humidity on a remote Hawaiian island whilst looking after her two children under the age of five.
The nominations follow on from another Sports Journalism student Nick Friend being a finalist for the Young Sports Writer of the Year Award at February’s Sports Journalism Association Awards.
Programme Director of the Sports Journalism MA Daragh Minogue said, “It's a great reward for the students, who this year rebranded the Sports Gazette, established a new editorial policy and embedded a new content management system. The magazine now has approximately 30,000 unique page impressions a month, but above all it's the quality of their journalism that stands out and a lot of credit should go to Matt and Nick, who have co-edited the publication since its relaunch.”
Matt and the Sports Gazette will find out if they have won at the awards ceremony on Saturday 7th April at the University of Cardiff.
