St Mary's Professor to give Lecture to the British Council in Seoul on the Science of Marathon Running

Prof John Brewer, Head of Sport, Health and Applied Science (SHAS) at St Mary’s University, Twickenham will be delivering a free lecture and Q&A session on the mechanics of marathon running at the British Council in Seoul ahead of the 2016 Dong-A Seoul International Marathon. Prof Brewer is an advisor to the London Marathon and a member of the UK Anti-Doping Board and will be in Korea discussing ‘The Science of Marathon Running, Nutrition and Hydration‎ - Past, Present and Future’ on Wednesday 16th March 2016. The lecture will focus on Prof Brewer’s analysis of current data and the limits of marathon performance in older runners to try and establish whether the 2-hour marathon barrier will ever be broken. Current research shows that it may not be uncommon in the future to see 80-year-old males running a marathon in or around the 2 hour 40 minute mark and females of a similar age breaking the 3-hour barrier. Prof Brewer, who himself has completed 17 marathons said: “At the moment most of the world’s best veteran times are set by older runners who were good club runners in their youth.  What could happen one day is that an elite world record holder will continue to train and run competitively (and injury free) until they reach the veteran stage, hence producing the level of performance that we currently don’t see in veteran athletes.” ‘The Science of Marathon Running, Nutrition and Hydration‎ - Past, Present and Future’ lecture will be taking place at 19:00 on Wednesday 16th March 2016 at the British Council in Seoul and will be followed by a Q&A session at 20:30.
