The Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) at St Mary’s University, Twickenham saw three of its athletes and alumni compete in finals at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing.
St Mary’s and EPACC alumnus Mo Farah won Gold in both the men’s 5000m and 10000m events. Recent Sport Science and Management Studies graduate Charlie Grice ran in the men’s 1500m final finishing in 9th place. Charlie has had an impressive season so far winning Gold in the British Indoor Championships and the British Athletics Championship.
St Mary’s Alumnus and EPACC Athlete Steph Twell also ran in the women’s 5000m final, finishing in 12th. Steph also recently won the women’s 5000m at the British Athletics Championships.
Director of Sport St Mary’s Andrew Reid-Smith said, “It was great to see St Mary's EPACC runners perform so well with Mo, Steph and Charlie all making their respective finals. Mo's gold in the 5,000m means he is the first man in history to achieve a distance triple-double having won golds in the 5,000 and 10,000m at London 2012, and the last two World Championships. He's arguably one of the greatest distance runners ever and Rio gives him another realistic opportunity to extend his outstanding record.”
