Three students from St Mary’s University, Twickenham have been selected for the England Universities Rugby Football League (RFL) squad.
The three students, Josh Ashby-Young, Sam Druce, and Charlie Greene, were selected from a field of 120 players who competed in the Regional Championships in Nottingham at the end of February for the 30 man train-on squad.
From this, a 25-player squad will be selected to compete in the 2015 RFL Associations Cup beginning in April. This will see the team take on the Great Britain Armed Forces, Teachers, and Police teams. Later in the year a further 20 man squad will be selected to compete in the 2015 Universities Four Nations Tournament, in Dublin.
Final year LLB Law student Josh Ashby-Young said, “The selection process was really tough. It’s great to get a chance to represent England, and I’m really excited to have the opportunity to do it with two of my teammates! We haven't had anyone selected for England for over four years, the fact that we've got three of us in it this year is fantastic.”
The RFL team at St Mary’s has had a strong season in the University RFL Premier South League to finish fourth, with only three points separating the top four teams.
The team we’re also treated to a Surprise and Delight session with the RFL in February to recognise the hard work of the team this season, with Education Officer at the RFL Stephen Guan stating, “St Mary’s has been a pinnacle club for us this year and hats off to them and the University for the work they have done and where they have got the club to this season.”
