Royal Institute of Philosophy lecture at St Mary’s

The next in the series of Royal Institute of Philosophy (RIP) lectures at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, is being held on 26^th February 2015. This free lecture, titled Statistical predictions are always true (and that’s why they are not about me), is given by Dr Ardo van den Hout. The lecture will discuss the importance of understanding statistical statements and explore the errors that can be made when using statistics. Knowledge of statistics is not needed for the lecture, as the basic elements will be introduced. Dr Ardo van den Hout is a lecturer in statistics at the Department of Statistical Science at University College London (UCL). His philosophical interests are in the epistemology of mathematics. His work in statistics is on methods for longitudinal data analysis and multi-state models. His work has been published in journals such as Statistical Modelling, Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, Statistics in Medicine, and Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series C. The lecture is free and open to the public with no registration required. It will take place at St Mary’s Strawberry Hill Campus from 5.15 to 6.00pm, the lecture will be followed by a 45 minute Q&A session.
