St Mary’s to Host Lecture on Failures of Understanding

On 4^th December St Mary’s University, Twickenham will host the third lecture in its public series presented by the Philosophy department in collaboration with the Royal Institute of Philosophy. The lecture, titled ‘Failures of Understanding’, will be given by Roxana Baiasu, Associate Member of the Philosophy Faculty, Oxford University and Visiting Lecturer and Teaching Fellow at Birmingham University. The lecture will focus on the claim of the German philosopher Heidegger that understanding and speech are equally basic and mutually dependent in the constitution of our making sense of what there is. The inquiry into Heidegger’s understanding of speech phenomena will also show something very significant about the finitude of understanding. There are two main parts of the argument: a phenomenological discussion of listening to one another in a speech context, and a conceptual investigation concerning the relationship between understanding and speech. The lecture is free and open to the public with no registration required. It will be held at St Mary’s Strawberry Hill campus from 5.15pm – 6pm and followed by a 45 minute Q&A session.
