Over the weekend, nearly 150 students at St Mary’s University, Twickenham took part in a Glow in the Dark Dodgeball event, the first of its kind in a UK University.
Hosted by SIMMSActive in conjunction with McClusky’s night club in Kingston, the event aimed to get more staff and student’s involved in recreational sport across the University and to promote the new SIMMSActive Programme.
SIMMSActive Coordinator Tatum Colclough said, “The SIMMSActive Glow in the Dark Dodgeball Event was a huge success and encouraged 149 students to get involved in a new way to play dodgeball. McClusky’s were also a massive help and supported the event by providing us with UV lights and some amazing prizes.
“UV Dodgeball is massive in America but has not been played widely in the UK. We are proud to be one of the first Universities in the UK to try this unique spin on dodgeball and it proved to be a huge hit amongst the students of St Mary’s! We are looking forward to introducing many more UV Sports to the SIMMSActive Programme so that a variety of students have the chance to get involved in these special events.”
The SIMMSActive Programme was introduced in September 2014 to provide all students with a range of affordable and flexible weekly recreational activities, due to St Mary’s being the recipient of National Lottery Funding from Sport England’s University Sport Activation Fund. All activities take place on campus and encourage students to be more physically active in a more social and fun environment and without the pressures of competitive sport.
