This weekend saw St Mary’s University, Twickenham athletes secure a number of medals on behalf of Team Great Britain at the 2014 European Athletics Championships which took place from 12th to 17th August in Zurich.
Jo Pavey, who trains with St Mary’s Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) kicked off the celebrations by earning Gold in the Women’s 10,000m event on Tuesday 12th August. This was Jo’s second medal in two weeks after her recent success at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Wednesday 13th August saw multiple medals from the likes of St Mary’s alumni Mo Farah, Andy Vernon and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey. Mo and Andy dominated the Men’s 10,000m event (respectively) earning Gold and Silver, with Andy recording a seasonal best. Meanwhile Harry ran in the Men’s 100m Final and secured a Bronze medal.
Mo Farah and Andy Vernon’s success continued when they ran the Men’s 5,000m event on 17th August. The Pair earned podium positions again, Mo Farah with his second Gold of the tournament and Andy Vernon gained Bronze to be added to the medal table.
Current student Charlie Grice narrowly missed out on a medal after qualifying third in the Men’s 1500m he finished 13th in the final.
Overall a good competition for Team GB and St Mary’s. Great Britain and NI won the competition with 23 Medals overall, six of which were earnt by St Mary’s students past and present.
