Grant Awarded to St Mary’s Philosophy Team

The Philosophy team at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham has been successfully awarded a grant from the Higher Education Academy (HEA) to run a workshop exploring student teaching and assessment methods. The grant was awarded to Dr Stephen Rainey, Research Fellow in St Mary’s School of Arts and Humanities for the development of a workshop called ‘Assessment: Group Effort, or Individual Achievement?’ which is being held at St Mary’s Strawberry Hill campus on Tuesday 4th February 2014. The day-long event will give delegates the opportunity to explore assessment methods where students work together, but are marked individually. It will allow for discussion about how students can be assessed on more than just academic performance at that moment in time. It will also delve into the use of media technologies to build student assessment into the learning process. There will be a number of sessions running throughout the day including the use of multimedia in bioethics education with Dr Chris Willmott (University of Leicester), Philosophical Dialogue as Assessment and Discussion: Opportunities, challenges, ways and means in innovative learning and assessment.
