St Mary’s University College, Twickenham is exploring the role of wonder in history during a guest seminar this Thursday 12th September. The seminar has been organised by St Mary’s new Centre for Philosophy of History, which is due to be officially launched at the end of the month, it will be led by guest speaker Prof Marnie Hughes-Warrington, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) at the Australian National University. Beginning from Aristotle’s characterisation of philosophy, Prof Hughes-Warrington’s talk will sketch out the propositions of history makers about the limits and features of their discipline as a possible way of addressing this ancient, and troubling question. Prof Hughes-Warrington is a leader in her field, having published six books including Revisionist Histories (2013), History Goes to the Movies (2007) and Palgrave Advances in World Histories (ed, 2005). She has been awarded $18 million in grants during her career and her writing and teaching has taken her from the study of Hegel’s theories, to historical films and through to hate histories. These topics are all drawn together by her interest in what history is, why people make histories, and why some people hurt one another in the name of history. The free seminar will take place at 2pm at St Mary’s Strawberry Hill campus and is open to staff, students and the public without prior registration.
