All video content created must have captions on it. Captions allow for people with hearing disabilities or are unable to listen environment, as they might be in a loud place, to have access to a text version of the information provided in the audio.
The following guidance will be specific to Panopto as our supported platform for video content. If you are using a different service, it is recommended that you search the service's support pages for captioning guidance.
Panopto offers Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) to generate automatic captions for any videos uploaded to its service. This service will not be 100% accurate, and it is highly recommended that you check the generated captions before posting your video to Moodle or sending to colleagues. It is recommended that you speak clearly, at a constant tempo, and into the microphone to get the best results.
Once the captions have been generated, you will need to check through and confirm their accuracy. If there is anything which is not accurate you can edit these within the Panopto window.
If you have a presentation which has multiple presenters, it is recommended that you edit the captions to state who is saying what, as this can help with clarity.
If you have created a captions file in another system, such as a Youtube video, then you can manually upload this file using the process below.
If required, you can download the captions and send these seperately for someone to consume.
