Multimedia: Video and Audio

Recommendation

 Rationale

 Silver standard:

 Pre-recorded micro   lectures:

Offer 10-minute pre-recorded micro lectures which students can watch in advance of a live session.

Record content that will be useful in forthcoming academic years and have a legacy.

Avoid including administrative information in recorded lectures. This will future-proof content.

Follow up with an activity such as a quiz or social learning opportunity. You can even insert a quiz into your Panopto video.

This is a great way to flip the learning experience [hyperlink] and make more room for student voice in live sessions.

Be tactical with the content you pre-record. Choose content that will have legacy and be followed by well-worked?

 Silver standard:

 Use Panopto folders:

All recorded lectures should be saved in the correct Panopto folder and embedded onto Moodle.

Only the correct students will be able to access content in the correct folders.

If staff leave or are absent, content is more easily available.

 Gold standard:

Micro-multimedia content:

Offer weekly short (one or two minute) videos or podcasts to add variety to student online learning journeys. This might include:

  • A welcome to the week
  • An overview of Learning foci
  • Weekly questions (try a provocative question)
  • Key thinking points
  • Industry experts
  • Recorded assessment guidance
  • Insights into key readings
  • Alumni-created content.

Follow-up with an asynchronous activity and encourage peer review and reflection.

This kind of content is a good way for teaching staff to build relationships with students. Informal and low-tech options can add a 'human' dimension to online learning.

Why not record a short audio recording on a mobile phone and upload to Panopto.
