All staff at St Mary's University are expected to remain up to date on essential training, as identified in the University's Essential Skills Matrix. The Essential Skills Matrix sets out required training all staff must complete to ensure they are compliant with relevant regulation and legislation.

Some training is a one off requirement when you join the university or if you are taking on new responsibilities, while other training should be refreshed annually.

How to complete your training

All Essential Training courses are to be completed within the Learning Management System, SMILE.

To log in to SMILE, select the option 'Log in using Sign in with Single Sign On'. 

You can find your assigned Essential Training courses, under 'My Courses - Courses I have to do'.

Specific training requirements

Staff with specific responsibilities are also required to complete training in line with the Essential Skills Matrix. These roles include:

  • budget holders (one off training)
  • fire marshals
  • first aiders
  • interview panel chairs and members (one off training)
  • lead and designated Safeguarding Officers
  • Mental Health First Aiders
  • people managers.

Role/department specific health and safety training can be accessed under the 'Courses I have to do' tab in SMILE. Other groups will be contacted directly about their training requirements as and when dates are available.

List of essential training for all staff

Annual training includes:

  1. Equality and Diversity
  2. Understanding Health & Safety
  3. Fire Safety
  4. Data Protection Briefing (GDPR)​
  5. Information Security Essentials​
  6. Safeguarding Essentials.

One off training for new staff includes:

  1. staff induction
  2. role/department specific health and safety training.
