The School of Liberal and Creative Arts is home to the Humanities, Film, and Acting degrees at St Mary’s University.
The School prides itself on its academic and industry expertise as well as its high quality teaching and research. All the academics teaching on the courses will have either research or industry expertise which informs their practice. At the forefront of our ethos is the student experience. In the School we know all our students by name and offer them a personalised and supportive learning journey. To enhance our high-quality teaching and research, we engage closely with local heritage and community arts organisations, cultivating our contacts with local and national theatre and film. The School has a thriving extra-curricular agenda including research seminars, conferences, exhibitions, creative writing evenings, events, and performances both on and off campus.
Students will have the opportunity to gain ‘real world’ experience through work placements, internships, and collaborative relationships with arts and historical organisations and archives around London. We encourage students to engage with and set up their own Social Clubs and become part of a thriving creative community at St Mary’s University.
As well as supporting our students while they are doing their degree, we are also keen to maintain our alumni links. Graduates of Acting include the very successful Tom Grennan while many others have gone on to successful careers in the music, film production, and acting industries, while alumni of English Literature have found various outlets for their skills such as a postgraduate degree in Medical Administration, public relations in the nuclear industry, and editorial assistant at Faber publishing, to name but a few. We can also boast a number of successful published authors from our Creative Writing programmes, Jess Kidd (Himself), Muhammad Khan (Kick the Moon), Lara Dearman (The Devil’s Claw) and Adam Sharp (‘Play’, in Common People, edited by Kit de Waal).
