Degree programmes offered by the School of Education

The School of Education at St Mary's University offers a range of foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees including QTS programmes at Secondary, Primary and the Early Years Foundation Stage level, as well as wide range of education and teaching Master's degrees.

Undergraduate programmes

Graduates on our BA Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the BA Primary Education (Work Based) with QTS follow a carefully designed academic and school-based programme to meet the requirements of the Teachers’ Standards as set out by the Department for Education. This leads to high employability rates as Newly Qualified Teachers.

The work-based route to QTS also allows applicants to follow an special educational needs and disability (SEND) specialist pathway, distinctive to programme.

Our Foundation degrees in Early Years Education and Primary Education - Foundation Degree, are particularly suitable for those working in early years and primary school settings. Gradutes of these programmes can go on to study at undergraduate level to gain qualified teacher status.

The Education Studies programme prepares students for work in a range of educational and social care settings in the UK and globally. Graduates from this programme are welcome to apply for PGCE Primary and Secondary ITT programmes in order to become qualified teachers.

PGCE Primary with QTS

We offer full-time and part-time PGCE Primary routes into teaching. This is an outstanding course designed to prepare new teachers with the theoretical knowledge and practical experience to embark on a career in teaching.

PGCE Secondary with QTS

We offer full time PGCE Secondary routes into teaching in the following subject areas: English, History, Geography, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Religious Education, Physical Education and Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics). This is an outstanding course covering all aspects of theory and practice for new entrants into the teaching profession.

Our MA Catholic School Leadership programme is the only Catholic School Leadership master's programme offered currently in the UK, supporting specifically the distinctive leadership development for people at all levels of Catholic education.

The MA Education, International Development and Social Justice has been specifically designed for individuals who are passionate about education but who do not necessarily want to be teachers. This degree will help to prepare you for international careers with Government, NGOs, bilateral and multilateral organisations, research institutions, and charities.

We offer a suite of master's in Education programmes which are very popular with teachers who are exploring aspects of their practice in greater depth. These are offered in a variety of formats – full and part time, taught and distance, on campus, and in other off-site locations. Some of these programmes include:
